The Boy that didn’t get a ticket – No 87. Giclee Signed by Mackenzie Thorpe and George Best

Item Number:  1942-1

This rare and now sold out limited edition giclée was the highlight of ‘The GAME of LIFE’ paintings launched in 2003 by Mackenzie Thorpe. They were inspired by football and its impact across generations that were translated into a collection of 20 limited works on paper with complementary sculpture and memorabilia.

'The Boy that didn’t get a ticket' was the largest and most popular from the series and depicts a boy watching the game from a high vantage point in a street outside Old Trafford. He is wearing a Manchester United number 7 shirt in honour of his hero, George Best.

This is what Mackenzie Thorpe said about this painting on launch. This boy doesn't have a ticket to the football match. He stands alone. Everyone else has a ticket. He wears a number 7 shirt, in honour of his hero George Best. George Best was the name on everyone's lips, through his skill and flair he was an inspiration to so many. As children my generation remember him with admiration, the excitement and glamour he brought to our world. This boy from Ireland made something of himself...... there was a chance for all of us.

Spirit of Sport are keen collectors of MacKenzie Thorpe Art and have recently acquired edition number 87 of 495 that was owned by George Best and recently acquired from George’s former wife, Alex.

Whilst all prints are signed by the artist, this print is also signed by George Best, and is the only one signed by George. The confirmed story behind George signing the print is that it was knocked off the wall by the family dog and as the glass was broken at that time Alex took the opportunity to ask George to sign it before it was re-framed.

Our research reveals that George was either gifted or purchased the print at the closing auction for the original tour in 2003. This event was attended by over 1000 people who witnessed the sale of the paintings and a surprise appearance by George Best who acclaimed Mackenzie’s work as some of the best he had ever seen and unique in capturing the spirit of football. It has recently been reframed in a distressed silver surround with double mounts to create this stunning and imposing piece. The overall size if 124cm by 114cm with the actual print size, 90cm by 78cm.

Due to the large size of this piece the delivery charge will be dependant on location and when you require delivery, so if you purchase the delivery charge may not reflect the actual delivery cost. It will not be prohibitive so please contact us for a quote.

Mackenzie continues to be the most collectable painter in Britain and as many visitors to galleries will know acquiring his editions is a competitive game in itself! Therefore this low edition number signed by both Mackenzie Thorpe and the legend George Best is truly a rare piece of Mackenzie Thorpe work and is a real collector’s piece for an Art and/or Manchester United fan.
