Rory Underwood – 1992 Match Worn World Cup England shirt
Item Number: 1305
Rory Underwood is simply an England Rugby legend. He won 84 England and 6 Lions caps between 1984 and 1996 (then an English record, later surpassed by Jason Leonard - it remains the highest total for an English back), scoring a record 49 tries for England, and 1 for the British Lions. In 1992 he switched from the right to the left wing to accommodate his younger brother, Tony, in the team. They were the first brothers to represent England at the same time since 1937. This very rare one-off item of memorabilia is Rory’s numbered match worn England shirt from the 1992 season, the season England won the Grand Slam. It displays all the usual embroidery and is the heavyweight material used for match shirts of this era. It is has recently been framed in a stunning silver surround with dual mounts and a photo of Rory from the same era, wearing this actual or an identical shirt. There is also a plaque detailing Rory’s career. The shirt belongs to a former employee of the RFU who travelled with the team and built up a collection of match worn shirts, some of which he is now selling. It is very rare for match worn shirts of this era to become available, particularly from a legend such as Rory Underwood, so represents a fine opportunity to obtain a historic item of England Rugby history.
