1830 - Malcolm Campbell – Originally signed Land Speed Record Presentation

Malcolm Campbell – Originally signed Land Speed Record Presentation

Malcolm Campbell – Originally signed Land Speed Record Presentation

Item Number:  1830

In 1933 at Daytona Beach, Florida, Sir Malcolm Campbell set a speed of 272.46mph to break his own Land Speed World Record. His 'Bluebird' car now weighed four tons and was powered by a Rolls-Royce V-12, 36 ˝ - litre, 2500 h.p. aero engine.

This stunning and rare presentation celebrates his achievement and displays original 20” press photos of the car on the beach surrounded by team members and of Campbell breaking the world record.

There is an original Postal Cover franked Feb 22 1933 and stamped New Record 273mph with a motif bearing the legend ‘International Speed Trials 1933’.

On the reverse side are the original signatures of Sir Malcolm Campbell, Leo Villa and the entire Bluebird team and AAA officials (17 in total).

It is presented in a stunning brush silver surround, with dual inset mounts and a plaque that details this remarkable achievement.

The first day cover can be seen both on the front with the signatures showing and the reverse of the frame in a cut out aperture (as shown). Measures in a large and impressive 89xm by 67cm by 3cm.

Some extra research has been found regarding the how and why of the cover. It appears that Lewis F Law in the address was a ‘legal’ person. A company bearing his name still exists in the area. Further the official photographer named on the cover was also a local person and it was he who got the signatures whilst working with the team. It is known that a second cover exists (damaged) in his private collection. The signatures were collected in the same sequence on both covers.

It was originally assumed that it was an ‘enthusiast’ who got the signatures but that is not correct and they were got by one of the team which explains how so many were gathered and also indicates that the public did not have convenient access to obtain such a set of signatures.

It is therefore an extremely rare and highly collectable item of historic Motorsport memorabilia.
