It may have only lasted for just over eight minutes, but for many Marvin Hagler's savage middleweight tussle with Tommy Hearns remains the most breathtaking fight in the grand old history of boxing.

It's easy to go over the top when describing big fights of yesteryear, but this one is almost without equal. The promoters billed the contest 'The Fight', but it was so much more than that.

There was genuine animosity between the pair, and so by the time they climbed through the ropes on an April evening back in 1985, there atmosphere had reached fever pitch. Yet for all the expectation, nobody could have foreseen the drama that was to follow.

From the bell both fighters stood toe to toe, first Hearns and then Hagler and by the third both were hurt. Hearns' rangy frame sagged alarmingly and Hagler sensed blood. He leapt after his opponent and continued to bang away, hitting him anywhere and everywhere with a shocking intensity.

Hearns was reduced to rubble on the ropes but just as the referee was about to step in he rose again in one final act of defiance. It was all in vain though. He was in no position to walk unaided let alone box and a fight that would be talked about always was waved off.

The performance and victory was of course Hagler's finest hour and to this day is remembered as the most brutal boxing contest of them all.
