Ferrari The First Grand Prix Victory
A rare and unique opportunity to obtain a framed and glazed limited edition and signed print by Nicolas Watts depicting Ferraris first Grand Prix win at Silverstone in 1951. It is signed by the artist and both drivers, the winner Jose Gonzales and L Villoresi who came third. It is numbered 142 of 500 and measures an impressive 34 by 27.
Enzo Ferrari stands accused of slaying the team that gave birth to him today after Jose Gonzalez, 'The Pampas Bull', grabbed a victory that few could have anticipated. This was a day when the new vanquished the old and the balance of power shifted from the pre-war Alfettas to cars born from the modern school of racing car design, Ferrari.
Earlier races this year have seen the Ferrari's challenging hard but Silverstone suited the car to a tee. Practice saw Gonzalez producing the first ever 100mph lap with the master Juan Fangio and his Alfa over a second slower.
As the flag dropped to start the race Bonetto took off into the lead, only to be hauled in by Gonzalez shortly after the end of the first lap. Fangio edged ahead after the tenth lap and managed to build a lead of some five seconds over the following 15 laps. Gonzalez ran behind him knowing that his countryman would have to make a fuel stop before long.
On lap 48 Fangio peeled in for a fuel stop that took some 49 seconds during which time Gonzalez stormed ahead managing to get a full 36 seconds ahead before Fangio rejoined the circuit. Over the next 13 laps Gonzalez edged ahead to such an extent that by the time his own pitstop began he was almost one and half minutes clear of Fangio. His stop occupied just 23 seconds and all that remained was for Gonzalez to reel off the remaining laps to take the chequered flag and an historic victory for Enzo Ferrari and his team. A rare and collectable item of memorabilia.
